about

This song deals with a particular character in Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book" that represents death known as The Lady On The Gray. In the story she's not someone to be feared but is rather seen as a benevolent guide to whatever a person's afterlife may be. Written from the point of view of someone recently deceased who is journeying with The Lady, this song delves into all the incredible sensory experiences and awesome adventures one man has on his way to being dead.

lyrics

I'm stealing glances at the underside of seams
and though it's threadbare there's something natural to me
and pulling further only straightens up the view
of all the disparate dimensions of a thing I can't subdue

This separation is something endless to explore
my solid stature still lying crumpled on the floor
and I could stay here simply filter through the walls
but I am funneled by an element that softly pulls and calls

The Lady on the Gray
is feeding me on something that nobody else can taste
I'm powerless to stay
as she's slipping through the floorboards and my judgment starts to sway

I'm moving slowly and every fracture feels a mile
observing angles I'm in a hurry to compile
for while I flicker gently warming as I will
I'm peeking over pavement with my senses standing still

The Lady on the Gray
is feeding me on something that nobody else can taste
I'm powerless to stay
as she's slipping through the floorboards and my judgment starts to sway

The culmination of something denser than I know
and an equation that finally balances to null
and I'm dissolving over everything I see
but all the consequence is meaningless to everyone but me

The Lady on the Gray
is feeding me on something that nobody else can taste
I'm powerless to stay
as I'm slipping through the floorboards and I finally see her face
